Bring the family and enjoy the remount of Opera Orlando’s holiday confectionery treat, Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel. Sung in English and reduced to a kid-friendly 75 minutes, this retelling of the Grimm fairy tale features a lush score, charming characters, and a delightfully villainous witch you won’t want to miss. The cast features soprano Kyaunnee Richardson as the feisty and adorable Gretel with mezzo-soprano Gloria Palermo as her headstrong but lovable brother Hansel. Mezzo-soprano Robyn Rocklein is the witch and creepy purveyor of cookies, candies, and cakes. Opera Orlando’s education director Robin Jensen conducts, and artistic director Grant Preisser directs, with musicians from the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and members of the Opera Orlando Youth Company.
Hansel & Gretel is a spooky and imaginative production for kids and adults alike, presented in the round in the intimate Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater. It’s a show with a lot of heart and a great message about family and perseverance. Audiences surround the action and are in for a feast of rich visuals, gorgeous music, and exemplary singing, all aimed at engaging children in the excitement and fun of opera.
Hansel & Gretel will run for four performances, January 29–31, 2021. Enjoy family-friendly fun and holiday treats in the lobby, and meet the cast after the show.
